The 2009 Huia Rosé is made form fully ripe Merlot and Malbec grapes sourced from the Brancott Valley, one of the Southern Valleys running off the Wairau Valley. The grape ratio is 10% Malbec and 90% Merlot. Our goal with this wine ( the first Huia Rosé ) was to have little skin contact with the fully ripe grapes to give a delicate salmon colour to the Rosé. Wild yeasts were used for fermentation along with a short time in older neutral French oak. We aimed for good palate structure with some complexity from the lees characters. The wine reflects delicate strawberry and blackberry flavours. Although light in colour it has real savoury depth and weight on the palate with fine acidity. This Rosé is well balanced and can be served lightly chilled. It is excellent as an aperitif or for Al Fresco dining.
