The 2001 vintage conditions were typical of Marlborough's cool climate but with little rainfall. With these dry settled conditions, budburst and flowering were successful. Ripening was even through the vineyards and the cool nights helped develop intense aromatic flavours. The lack of rain helped to keep the grapes clean and free from botrytis. Huia experienced an excellent vintage with real fruit intensity and ripeness showing in the wines.
Our main gewürztraminer vineyard, the Hassan TraminerView Vineyard, is located on rich silt beside the Opawa River. We hand harvested the younger vines on the 31st March at 24.9 Brix. This very ripe portion was whole bunch pressed and underwent an indigenous yeast ferment. Huia also once again sourced fruit from the Fell Vineyard, just across the paddock. These distinctively Turkish Delight flavoured grapes were from 20 year old vines on their own roots. They were harvested 10th April with an average grape sugar level at 24.0 Brix. The juice was very clear with a golden edge. To retain the aromatic terpenes, the juice underwent a long and cool ferment.
On the nose, rose petals abound. This is a rich full flavoured wine with complex floral, lychee and dried fig flavours. The balance and depth of the palate supports a long dry finish.
