The 2001 growing season started off very well with above average monthly temperatures, although sunshine hours were lower than usual. February was very cool and as a result berry ripening slowed down. However the season really came together in March, with huge amounts of sunshine and warmth. Ripening was even through the vineyards and the cool nights helped develop intense aromatic flavours.

Huia experienced an excellent vintage with real fruit intensity and ripeness showing in the wines. The 2002 Sauvignon Blanc was harvested from five vineyards across the Wairau Valley. These locations were selected to increase the depth of varietal flavour. Some of the fruit was first crop and was handpicked and whole bunch pressed. A portion of the wine underwent an indigenous yeast ferment. The remainder was fermented long and cool in stainless steel.

The nose shows lifted gooseberry and passionfruit aromas with a hint of tropical fruit. The palate is well balanced with ripe guava and passionfruit combining with the rich gooseberry flavours. The wine has excellent length and texture with a crisp, dry finish.
