Huia Brut 2006
Background
The Huia vineyard is made up of recent fluvial soils and large stone deposits. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay elements for this sparkling wine are grown on the more silt-based, richer part, of the vineyard. The crop level is controlled in the Pinot Noir with green harvesting of unripe bunches.
Winemaking:
The grapes are hand-picked and then whole–bunch pressed giving very fine juice. This is fermented in old oak barrels with no temperature control. Once the ferment is through the vigorous stage the wine is transferred to a 12,000 litre French oak vat for malolactic fermentation and maturation, after which it is bottled. After 4 years we hand riddle the wine and disgorge.
Tasting Note:
The Huia Brut 2006 is light straw in colour with a fine persistent bead. Delicate stone fruit, fresh bread and brioche notes with a hint of strawberry show on the nose. The palate is fresh and creamy and the finish is long lively and dry.
Food Matches:
Huia Brut is delicious with: canapés, fresh and oven baked oysters, sushi, smoked salmon and fresh seafood.
