PRESSBOOK - Pinot Gris

Gourmet Traveller
December 2009 by Bob Campbell MW and Huon Hooke
Huia seems to achieve flavour intensity through low cropping level and an ethereal texture from minimal skin contact. The result is a beguiling and subtly powerful wine that's just about as god as Marlborough pinot gris gets. Made in the style of the pinot grigio with an emphasis on fruit flavour and without the tannic structure that's a feature of many wines. Delicious now and very fresh. While the wine will probably offer good drinking for a few years, it's hard to imagine getting much better. BC

Huia Marlborough NZ Pinot Gris 2007
"This is one of the best vintages from a consistently good Pinot Gris producer. Full-flavoured wine with a gentle, silken texture and appealing pear and lanolin characters. Great purity of flavour in an off/dry style."

PIQUANT GRIS
Huia Marlborough Pinot Gris 2006
Claire & Mike Allan's light touch at Huia translated into some wonderfully textural aromatics, like this soft and balanced dry pinot gris. Beneath its delicate layers of quince, ripe apple and five-spice is an underlaying richness, plus great drinkability that comes from a freshness that runs through the wines.

The 2006 Huia Pinot Gris shows beautiful fragrance and freshness and a tight acidity that doesn't quite disguise its alcholic power. "Mineral and slaty notes," Forrestal said. "Vibrancy and refreshing acidity". I was a fan of the pear like aroma and thought the palate hung together very well. Nick Bulleid MW

Huia Pinot Gris 2006 Marlborough- 5 stars
The Pinot Gris is exceptionnal: full bodied, dry wine, that has refined character (peach, litchi nut, passion fruit, pineapple, grapefruit), great balance and a very long finish.

Huia Marlborough Pinot Gris 2005
Very Young wine, doing well with lots of power and strength yet needs a few more months. Some oak maturation'for texture' adds lots of interest. A serious Huia style unfolding. A wine for 2006-2007

2004 Huia Pinot Gris
This is made from 'terrace fruit' sourced between Brancott and Clayvin. A little closed on the nose, but celestial on the palate, this one of the very top Kiwi PGs. Intensity, spice, lusciousness and grip on the finish-this wine has it all.

Huia 2004 Pinot Gris

Huia's whites are among New Zealand's finest( not richest). The Pinot Gris is exceptionnal: full bodied and finely flavored, tasting of guava, pear and lemon peel. It is very balanced, with a long persistent finish. 30% BF. 2300 cases.

Huia Marlborough Pinot Gris 2004

About a third fermented in oak; just a hint showing in behind. The fruit however, is pretty strong for a nine-month old wine, a very promising beginning which will open up to a bold and quite concentrated style as 2005 progresses; complex; becoming rich and by March will be a fine wine with a lot of character.

EXCEPTIONAL

2004 Huia Pinot Gris (!!) Marlborough: Floral and blossom-y, with hints of tropical fruit, mango and passion fruit. Dry, but so succulent and rich it should go with Hunanese food.

2004 Huia Marlborough Pinot Gris
A superb Pinot Gris. Brilliant straw colour with waterlike hue. Lifted nose of ripe pear, spice and mandarin. The palate displays a strong Alsatian influence, showing excellent body weight and silky texture. Pronounced flavours of ripe pear and spice, followed by subtle back palate flavours of musk and mandarin. Clean acid finish, followed by a long aftertaste of ripe pear and madarin. Cellar 1-2 years ( 2005-2006)

Huia 2002 Pinot Gris - Exceptional - Tropical fruit notes with mango, pear, and pineapple, and handsome structure of fruit in the mouth. Best with Chinese food.

Huia 2002 Pinot Gris, Marlborough - Huia produces very stylish white wines, as is this. The Pinot Gris is full bodied, round, medium rich, and long, tasting of roasted nut, tea, apple, guava, and lime. 1350 cases. [2003-2004]

Huia Pinot Gris - The 2000 vintage was harvested in the Anderson vineyard in the Brancott valley, whole-bunch pressed and fermented with indignous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. A dry style (4.8 grams/litre of sugar), it's full-bodied (13.5 per cent alcohol), fresh and vibrant, with clearly varietal pear and spice flavours and a well-rounded finish.

Huia Pinot Gris 2001
Quite a lot of intensity: some mineral tone, some pear fruit characters-atight mixt of characters unfolding well to show best some warmer months maturing. Mid 2002 on.
