2000 Huia Brut, Marlborough "Claire and Mike Allan's winery isn't one of the best known names in Marlborough, but since they set up Huia Vineyards in 1996, they've quietly been making some of the best wines in the region. My favourites in the range have tended to be the aromatic whites-the Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris are very good- but this fizz could have me altering that opinion. Roughly half Chardonnay, with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier making up the balance, it is rich yet subtel, with smoky intensity, yeasty complexity, hints of dark chocolate, pineapple and toasted nuts, and beautiful balanced finish" 92/100
Huia Marlborough Brut 2000 One of the most complex, powerful, satisfying and refreshing "New World" Sparkling experiences imaginable. Several years aging in the bottle has produced a taste sensation that should be preferred to cheap French Champagne. Brilliant bubbles to enjoy to 2008/10.
Huia Marlborough 2000 Brut The 2000 vintage(4stars) is a marriage of chardonnay and Pinot Noir with 23 per cent Pinot Meunier-an unusually high proportion by New Zealand standards of a variety grown widely in Champane, but little used here. The base wine was fermented and matured for nine months in old French oak casks and the wine has spent 42 months on its lees before it was disgorged. One of the best wines yet under this label, it's pale straw, crisp and refined, with a slightly nutty fragrance, lively, yeasty, citrusy, toasty flavours showing good complexity and tightly structured, dryish finish(only six grams/litre of residual sugar).
"It is both rich in character and youthful and vigorous in flavors, with a long finish. It tastes of ripe grapes, citrus fruit, roasted nut and plum. 33% PN, 29% PM and 38% Chardonnay. 700 cases(2004-2005)."
"A classic 'Champagne' blend of 38% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir and 29% Pinot Meunier, barrel-fermented with full malolactic, followed by 42 months on the yeast, this is brioche-y and lively, with ripe, pure fruit and a smooth, dry finish. It will show more complexity as it matures."
Huia 1998 Sparkling Brut Méthode Traditionelle, Marlborough - (Disgorged July 2001, a blend of 50% chardonnay and 50% pinot noir). Pale gold color. Lovely yeasty, biscuity aromas. Plenty of mousse, lemon acidity and a rich marmite character on the finish. Rich and powerful.

Huia 1997 Brut, Marlborough - Made like a wine that just happens to have bubbles, this blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is entirely barrel-fermented and undergoes full malolactic before its secondary fermentation in the bottle. Partly as a result, this is one complex sparkler, with aromas and cool flavors of peach, strawberry, soy sauce and newly-risen bread. Elegant and smooth.
Huia Marlborough Brut 1997 - Lovely, elegant and classy with good balance of moderate fruit weight with enough acidity. An average wine, wide appeal and able to be enjoyed by the sparkling enthusiast.

Huia NV Sparkling Brut Méthode Traditionelle - Generous and complex in flavor, with layers of lime, mineral, pear and peach on a round, subtle frame. The flavors last on the finish. Drink now.
